What is the difference between a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

Distinguishing between various mental health specialists can be confusing. Here is a brief summary of the differences in these mental health professionals.

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist, being a medical doctor (MD or DO), combines a medical and holistic approach to understanding and treating mental health conditions. Dr. Chande considers the interactions between the biological, psychological, and social components (biopsychosocial model) that may contribute to mental health conditions. With her comprehensive medical background, she can consider other medical diagnoses that may mimic a mental health diagnosis. In some cases, she may recommend lab work to rule out these possibilities. Additionally, as a licensed medical doctor, she can prescribe medications to treat mental health disorders.

Psychologist

On the other hand, psychologists hold doctoral degrees in psychology, either a PhD or Psy.D. They specialize in various theories and tailor talk therapy to each individual, also focusing on behavioral interventions. It’s important to note that psychologists in the state of Georgia do not have the authority to prescribe medication.

Frequently, individuals may work with both a psychiatrist and a psychologist as part of their treatment plan. Dr. Chande has been collaborating with psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPC), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSW) for the past 13 years.

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) with a nursing background who specialize in mental health and are also able to diagnose and prescribe medication. In Georgia, they must work under the supervision of a psychiatrist, who may or may not personally evaluate the patient.

Dr. Chande has provided supervision to APRN for over 13 years.
